History of Origin

From the concept to the Weinviertel dac

A short historical review, beginning with the basic concept and finishing with the end product, i.e. the Weinviertel dac is given below, in order to illustrate the amount of time it has taken to position Austrian wine in the international market.

On 1 March 2003, the Weinviertel dac was presented to the Austrian world of
wine as the first Austrian DAC wine:

1994

Discussions in the Austrian Wine Marketing Board about the general difficulty in the international wine marketing to decipher Austrian wine labels

1996

First suggestions by Austrian Wine Marketing Board aiming at more transparency on the labels;
The DAC concept is born

1997

Broad discussions of the concept also in Wine growers’ Association and Ministry of Agriculture;
Foreign excursions and guest lectures from international boards in Austria

1996/97

The Grüner Veltliner from Hungary is listed in the Austrian alimentation retail trade because of insufficient harvest quantities at home;
Discussions regarding deficiencies in the marketing of grape varieties

1997/98

Market research concerning wine growing regions and consumer expectations as well as scientific research concerning the DAC concept

1999

Robert Parker criticises Austrian wine labels as “illegible and confusing”

1999

EU Market regulations 1999 prescribe the establishment of organisations responsible for each individual branch

1999

Austrian wine law 1999: amendment to the common laws, creation of the wine growing areas of Niederösterreich and Burgenland as well as the wine growing regions of Weinland Austria (i.e. the provinces of Lower Austria and Burgenland) and Bergland Austria (i.e. the provinces of Upper Austria, Salzburg, Carinthia, Tyrol and Vorarlberg)

2000

Amendment to Wine Law 2000: General framework concerning the organisation of branches put in place

2001

Regulations concerning the organisation of branches become effective which permits the creation of National and Regional Wine Boards

Inaugural session of National Wine Board

Resolution by National Wine Board to create Regional Wine Boards of Thermenregion, Carnuntum, Traisental and Wachau

Resolution by National Wine Board to create Regional Wine Boards of Burgenland and Weinviertel

2002

Resolution by National Wine Board to create a Regional Wine Board of Kremstal

Resolution by National Wine Board to create a Regional Wine Board of Vienna.

Amendment to Wine Law 2002: the DAC designation is legally established;
Creation of the wine growing areas of Styria and Steirerland

Application by the Regional Wine Board for the Weinviertel dac designation to the National Wine Board

The National Wine Board approves the request for the DAC designation;
Creation of the Regional Wine Board of Kamptal.

2003

Weinviertel dac decree becomes effective

Presentation of Weinviertel dac, being the first Austrian DAC Wine, to the wine world
(vintage 2002)

2007

Five Years of Weinviertel dac!
(vintage 2006)

2010

„Weinviertel dac Reserve“ decree becomes effective
