Visiting the Weinviertel

The Weinviertel is a true insider’s secret for holidays, excursions and recreational sojourns. Whether visiting during the sunny summer months, in mild autumn weather of in spring when everything is in bloom, there is always plenty to see, experience and discover in the Weinviertel.

Explore the area at the foot of the Manhartsberg by bicycle or follow the 400-km long wine road and visit wineries and small, charming wine villages. Castles, churches, museums, art exhibitions, archaeological sites and wildlife parks are a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

Stroll through the “villages without chimneys”, as the old cellar alleys are affectionately called. Enjoy a leisurely glass of wine at a heuriger (winery tavern) at the end of the day. Children will love adventures with Betty Bernstein along the Bernsteinstrasse.

Excursion Destinations

Fossils World Weinviertel

You can marvel at the largest fossil oyster reef and the largest fossil pearl in the world at the Fossilienwelt Weinviertel.

This excursion takes back to the time when a tropical ocean covered the Weinviertel.

The landmark of the Fossilienwelt Weinviertel is the Turmschnecke (Tower Snail). This 17-metre (56 ft.) high lookout tower is a giant replica of a turitelladae, a fossil find from the oyster reef. Excavation fields and an adventure playground provide plenty of fun for children. Finds like shark teeth or pearly guarantee lasting impressions an the wish to return again.

Retzer Erlebniskeller

An intricate and expansive cellar labyrinth exists beneath the wine city Retz.

An extraordinary subterranean adventure can be experienced in the 20-km of connected cellar tunnels under the city centre of Retz.

Located at a depth of up to 20 metres (66 ft.) below the surface, the cellar labyrinth maintains a constant temperature of around 10 °C (50 °F). Trained personnel guide you though Austria’s largest historic cellar. One million visitors have already enjoyed this exploration.

Vino Versum Poysdorf

The WEIN+TRAUBEN (WINE&GRAPE) exhibition is like a historically grown city ensemble. The entrance into the modern, light-flooded wine market leads to a piazza with a wine press house and the historic stone house with its Traubenkino (grape cinema).

20 interactive stations in the WEIN+TRAUBEN allow visitors to discover the world of grapes, wine and viticulture. Visitors can rush through 150 million years of Poysdorf history with the timemachine joystick. Two aristocratic families wrestle for power in the battle of pedigree. A picture journey enables the digital exploration of historical paintings, a portrait photograph Otto von Bismarck speaks and in the winery festival room you can take a Bacchus selfie on a wine barrel.

The Weinviertel Way of St. James

Picturesque landscapes, splendid vineyards and rustic cellar lanes distinguish the Weinviertel Jakobsweg (Way of St. James). The 153-km trail leads hikiers from Drasenhofen to Krems. Upon opening in 2010 it immediately became an integral part of Austria’s pilgramage routes. Numerous heuriger (winery taverns) welcome hikers to enjoy a snack and a glass of Weinviertel DAC wine in cosy guest gardens.

MAMUZ

Both MAMUZ in Mistelbach and in Schloss Asparn an der Zaya are adventure museums of prehistory, ancient history and mediaeval archaeology and among the top tourist destination in Lower Austria. Not just children, but adults and history buffs will enjoy visiting these museums.
