Weinviertel – Home of the „Dash of Pepper“
The Weinviertel is located south of the Thaya River between the Manhartsberg mountain ridge in the west and the Marchfeld in the east and borders the Vienna city limits in the south. The entire spectrum of Grüner Veltliner – from lively, light-footed examples to age-worthy powerhouses – distinguishes the identity of Austria’s largest wine-growing area. A large wine diversity complements the flagship variety of the Weinviertel: from delicate Welschriesling to robust Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) to authentic red wines, from sparkling wine in Poysdorf to predicated sweet wines from the Marchfeld. The Weinviertel’s vinophile dynamic is particularly evident in the fact that it was the first wine-growing area in Austria with a protected designation of origin: the typical regional Grüner Veltliner is marketed under the name “Weinviertel DAC”.
